Mould Testing Technician Course

Build the knowledge and practical skills to assess water‑damaged buildings and conduct comprehensive pre‑remediation mould and moisture assessments with this 3‑month, part‑time program. This nationally accredited training includes a unit from the 11429NAT Advanced Diploma of Building Biology and combines flexible online learning with essential hands‑on field experience.

Course structure

• 30 hours of live online sessions to interact with the trainer, ask questions, and work through real‑world scenarios (Thursday evenings over 9 consecutive weeks)
• Two full days (15 hours) of practical field training in a real water‑damaged residential property, where you will apply testing methodologies, interpret findings, and practice documenting your results.
• Immediate access from enrolment to online learning materials, including a comprehensive downloadable manual, video lectures, and a curated library of peer‑reviewed papers and papers
• Ongoing support from dedicated trainers with extensive field experience and formal teaching qualifications

The recent publication of Australian Standards for professional mould remediation and Safe Work Australia’s Model Code of Practice: Managing the Risks of Biological Hazards at Work highlights the growing legal focus on mould and other biological hazards in buildings. Competent mould risk assessment and testing is increasingly critical for building professionals, facilities managers, landlords, restorers, and others responsible for occupant health and safety.

What You’ll Learn:

• Work, health and safety legislation pertaining to biological hazards
• The latest research on how dampness affects human health
• How to take a detailed environmental exposure history
• A structured approach to inspecting water damaged buildings gathering multiple forms of data
• Moisture mapping and identification of affected building materials
• Thermal imaging
• Biological monitoring, including air, dust, and surface sampling
• How to determine the extent of fungal particulate spread
• How to accurately interpret laboratory results against relevant exposure standards
• How to write clear, defensible assessment reports for clients and other stakeholders

Entry Requirements

You must be at least 18 years of age. We assume no previous knowledge or experience in the building or restoration industry. Candidates are expected to have good computers skills (Word), a high level of language and literacy skills sufficient to analyse and interpret complex documents, be prepared to learn specialised vocabulary appropriate to the restoration industry, comprehend video lectures, participate in field training, adapt spoken language to a range of clients, analyse laboratory reports, prepare written reports to provide precise meaning which meets audience purpose, interpret graphs and tables, and use computer software.

Investment

From 20th September 2026, the course fee will increase from $2,495 to $2,995 to reflect rising ASQA compliance and audit costs, additional teaching hours, and expanded content aligned with recent work health and safety legislation and Australian mould standards. Once we receive your pre‑enrolment documentation and complete your course interview, the college will issue an invoice for payment. Books and Equipment

Apart from a high lumen torch and respirator (preferably one that has been fit tested), students are not required to buy any equipment to attend this training. There are two set texts: ANSI/IICRC S520‑2024 Standard Guide for Professional Mould Remediation (through Standards Australia) and Healthy Home Healthy Family ebook ($30), which underpin industry best practice and building biology principles.

Assessments

The assessments are designed to ensure you have the knowledge, skills and templates to conduct an assessment of a water-damaged building. The assessments include developing a questionnaire and checklist and writing a report, and completing an online quiz. You will be provided with a mould report template that can be used in your business.
